Course Description

First course in the three part basic calculus sequence for students majoring in mathematics, science, or engineering. Topics include limits, continuity, differentiation, applications of differentiation, and integration. Applications of the derivative are covered in detail, including approximations of errors using differentials, maxima and minima problems, curve sketching, optimization problems, and Newton's Method. Topics on integration include Riemann sums, properties of definite integrals, integration by substitution, and integrals involving logarithmic, exponential, trigonometric, inverse trigonometric, and hyperbolic functions.

Learning outcomes for this section of math 125:

  1. Students will develop a basic understanding of the concepts of limits, rates of change, linear approximation, and Riemann sums, and be able to apply them.
  2. Students will be able to compute limits of simple functions.
  3. Students will be able to calculate (and simplify) derivatives involving rational, exponential, trigonometric, and inverse trigonometric functions.
  4. Students will be able to apply derivatives to various applications including optimization problems, linear approximation, and curve sketching.
  5. Students will be able to calculate (and simplify) integrals using some basic techniques of integration, including substitution and the Fundamental Theorem of Calculus.
  6. Students will be able to find the area of certain types of planar regions using integration.Enter text here.

The material covered on pages 1 – 23 is a brief review of precalculus mathematics. You should read this material and make sure you are comfortable with it. Students who are not familiar with this review material may need to take MATH 112, 113, or MATH 115.

Exams and Assignments

There will be homework assigned each day of class. Your two lowest scoring homework assignments will be dropped, and the remainder of the homework will be used to compute the homework portion of your course grade, as described in the course grade section below. This homework will be made available through the WebAssign system at www.webassign.net.

Grading Policy

Grades will be determined from four examinations, a comprehensive final examination, homework, and attendance in accordance with the following weights: the final will be worth 35% of the overall grade, homework will count for 20%, each exam will be worth 10%, and attendance will count for the remaining 5%. I will also compute the grade with the final in place of the lowest exam score, and give you the better grade. Letter grades will be given in accordance with the following divisions of the overall percentage score:

Policy on Missed Exams & Coursework

Homework will not be accepted after the due date, under any circumstances. It is for this reason that we will drop the two lowest homework scores. There will be no makeup for the first exam a student misses; instead the final will be used in its place. Should you be unlucky enough to miss two or more exams, makeup exams will be given only 1) for those exams after the first, and 2) in the event of serious illness or other extreme cases, confirmed by paperwork (e.g. a doctor’s not) presented to the instructor immediately upon your return. This policy includes absences from an exam for university related activities. If you are going to be absent from an exam, you should tell me as soon as you know this to be the case and should be prepared to document the event you will be attending.

Attendance Policy

Attendance is mandatory. I will take attendance each day of the semester. In addition, near perfect attendance will be rewarded. The attendance component of the grade will be computed in the following manner: I will take the total number of classes attended after the add/drop period and compare to the total number of classes. Perfect attendance will receive 7/5, missing one class will receive 6/5. Thereafter the 5 points will be apportioned by the percentage of attended classes (e.g. 75% attendance will result in 0.75*5 rounded to the nearest whole number). There is no reason why everyone should not get a 5 or higher!

Other Course Materials

Calculator policy: A graphing calculator may be helpful in understanding certain topics in this course, and may be needed for some homework problems. However, a calculator is not required, and use of a calculator will not be permitted during the exams.

Policy on Academic Misconduct

Severe Weather Protocol

In the case of a tornado warning (tornado has been sighted or detected by radar, sirens activated), all university activities are automatically suspended, including all classes and laboratories. If you are in a building, please move immediately to the lowest level and toward the center of the building away from windows (interior classrooms, offices, or corridors) and remain there until the tornado warning has expired. Classes in session when the tornado warning is issued can resume immediately after the warning has expired at the discretion of the instructor. Classes that have not yet begun will resume 30 minutes after the tornado warning has expired provided at least half of the class period remains.

UA is a residential campus with many students living on or near campus. In general classes will remain in session until the National Weather Service issues safety warnings for the city of Tuscaloosa. Clearly, some students and faculty commute from adjacent counties. These counties may experience weather related problems not encountered in Tuscaloosa. Individuals should follow the advice of the National Weather Service for that area taking the necessary precautions to ensure personal safety. Whenever the National Weather Service and the Emergency Management Agency issue a warning, people in the path of the storm (tornado or severe thunderstorm) should take immediate life saving actions.

When West Alabama is under a severe weather advisory, conditions can change rapidly. It is imperative to get to where you can receive information from the National Weather Service and to follow the instructions provided. Personal safety should dictate the actions that faculty, staff and students take. The Office of Public Relations will disseminate the latest information regarding conditions on campus in the following ways:

  • Weather advisory posted on the UA homepage
  • Weather advisory sent out through Connect-ED--faculty, staff and students (sign up at myBama)
  • Weather advisory broadcast over WVUA at 90.7 FM
  • Weather advisory broadcast over Alabama Public Radio (WUAL) at 91.5 FM
  • Weather advisories are broadcast via WUOA/WVUA-TV, which can be viewed across Central Alabama. Also, visit wvuatv.com for up-to-the-minute weather information. A mobile Web site is also available for your convenience.
