Exams and Assignments

  1. Midsemester Exams
  • There will be 4 midsemester exams.
  • They will be given during Thursday’s recitation, 6:30 PM – 7:50 PM. The dates of these exams are shown in the schedule, below.
  • Your lowest midsemester exam grade will be dropped.
  • Exams are closed book and closed notes. They will include material covered up to and including the Monday lecture of the exam week.
  • You must bring your Action card, driver's license, or government issued photo ID to all exams in order to receive a grade. You must bring a #2 pencil and your approved calculator. No hats can be worn; all bags, purses, etc. must be kept shut and placed against the wall on the aisles!
  • There will be no make-up exams. If you miss an exam, the missed exam will count as your dropped exam.
  • Missing the final exam or more than one mid-semester exam under any circumstances will result in failing the course.
  1. Final Exam:
  • Final exam is cumulative.
  • The final exam will be given on Monday, December 10, 2012 at 8 AM – 10:30 AM at Russell Hall 159.
  1. Homework:
  • There are online homework assignments, which will be assigned throughout the semester.
  • Homework will be conducted through MasteringChemistry and the due dates of these assignments will be listed on MasteringChemistry website. Access can be purchased at the Supe Store or directly at the MasteringChemistry website. The course ID is MCLEUNG41695
  • See the instructions to get access to MasteringChemistry on the course website, in Helpful Instructions tab.
  1. Quizzes:
  • Quizzes will be given during Thursday recitations.
  • There will be no make-up quizzes.
  • The quizzes are open book, but you cannot speak to other students. This does not mean you should not study for the quizzes because the quizzes are timed, and if you spend all your time trying to learn how to solve the problems during the quiz, you will most likely not do well.
  • The quiz will cover material up to and including Monday lectures, so material covered the day before the Thursday recitation would not tested.
  1. Participation/Attendance:
  • Throughout the semester, you will use your clickers to answer questions the instructor will be putting up during lectures.
  • See “Registering Clickers” and “Using Clickers” documents in Helpful Instructions tab in the course home page to learn how to register the clicker to this course and how to use them.
  • The scoring of these questions will be as follows: If you get the answer right, you will get the maximum points assigned to the question. If you get the answer wrong, you will get 50% of the maximum points assigned to the question, as participation/attendance points. If you do not answer, you will get 0 pts for that question
  • You should attempt to get all of these points

Laboratory Requirements

  • If you miss three or more labs you will automatically receive a grade of “F” for the laboratory section.
  • If you fail the laboratory section, you fail the entire course, no matter how well you perform in the lecture section. No previous lab grades can be used.
  • Details about the laboratory will be covered in the laboratory section meetings.
  • The lab manual is: General Chemistry Lab CH 101/102, University of Alabama, Chemistry Department.

Chemistry is a "hands-on" science. The experiments have been designed to assist the student in learning fundamental chemical principles. We hope that the experiments will also serve as an introduction to the basic laboratory operations and skills needed in the practice of chemistry.

  • Each student must purchase a lab manual. Each CH 101 student must take and pass the laboratory.

Attendance Policy

Attendance is required!!! It is the near-universal experience that students who attend class regularly make higher grades than those who do not. We will go over practice problems during class.

For laboratory, attendance is required as well.

Extra Resources/Help

  1. Recitation Sessions – Most Thursday recitation sessions that are not exam days will be used to catch up on lectures, work on problems, and for quizzes. They will be labeled as “Review” in the tentative schedule below. Quiz and exam questions will be testing your ability to apply the concepts taught in lectures to solve problems. During the recitation we will practice solving problems, so you should utilize this session to help yourself prepare for exams and quizzes.

  1. Blackboard – Information about the course will be uploaded to the Blackboard page periodically throughout the semester.

  • PowerPoint slides used for the lecture will be posted prior to the lecture; I suggest that you print them out prior to coming to class. Check the page often for updates. Even though the lecture slides are posted, notes will be written in class, which means you need to be present to take those notes. These lecture slides are not meant to substitute attending class.

  1. Office Hours - The course instructor has designated office hours to help any students who want extra instruction. Do not overlook this resource.

  1. Freshman Chemistry Help Center – The Department of Chemistry has all of its General Chemistry Laboratory Teaching Assistants (TAs) hold their office hours in a common room. This Freshman Chemistry Help Center will be open most afternoons from 1:00 – 5:00 PM Mon- Fri; however, more specific hours will be announced and posted early in the semester.

  1. Learning Skills Center - The Learning Skills Center is located in 124 Osband Hall and is loaded with helpful materials for CH-101 and 102. Please visit the center to determine if the available materials might be useful in your study of chemistry.

  1. Some graduate students are available for paid tutoring sessions for Freshmen. You can obtain a list of names from the Chemistry Main Office (Shelby 2005).

Extra Credit Opportunities

There are no extra credit opportunities.

Policy on Academic Misconduct

All students in attendance at the University of Alabama are expected to be honorable and to observe standards of conduct appropriate to a community of scholars. The University expects from its students a higher standard of conduct than the minimum required to avoid discipline. Academic misconduct includes all acts of dishonesty in any academically related matter and any knowing or intentional help or attempt to help, or conspiracy to help, another student.

The Academic Misconduct Disciplinary Policy will be followed in the event of academic misconduct.

Disability Statement

If you are registered with the Office of Disability Services, please make an appointment with me as soon as possible to discuss any course accommodations that may be necessary. If you have a disability, but have not contacted the Office of Disability Services, please call 348-4285 or visit 133-B Martha Parham Hall East to register for services. Students who may need course adaptations because of a disability are welcome to make an appointment to see me during office hours. Students with disabilities must be registered with the Office of Disability Services, 133-B Martha Parham Hall East, before receiving academic adjustments.

Severe Weather Protocol

In the case of a tornado warning (tornado has been sighted or detected by radar, sirens activated), all university activities are automatically suspended, including all classes and laboratories. If you are in a building, please move immediately to the lowest level and toward the center of the building away from windows (interior classrooms, offices, or corridors) and remain there until the tornado warning has expired. Classes in session when the tornado warning is issued can resume immediately after the warning has expired at the discretion of the instructor. Classes that have not yet begun will resume 30 minutes after the tornado warning has expired provided at least half of the class period remains.

UA is a residential campus with many students living on or near campus. In general classes will remain in session until the National Weather Service issues safety warnings for the city of Tuscaloosa. Clearly, some students and faculty commute from adjacent counties. These counties may experience weather related problems not encountered in Tuscaloosa. Individuals should follow the advice of the National Weather Service for that area taking the necessary precautions to ensure personal safety. Whenever the National Weather Service and the Emergency Management Agency issue a warning, people in the path of the storm (tornado or severe thunderstorm) should take immediate life saving actions.

When West Alabama is under a severe weather advisory, conditions can change rapidly. It is imperative to get to where you can receive information from the National Weather Service and to follow the instructions provided. Personal safety should dictate the actions that faculty, staff and students take. The Office of Public Relations will disseminate the latest information regarding conditions on campus in the following ways:

  • Weather advisory posted on the UA homepage
  • Weather advisory sent out through Connect-ED--faculty, staff and students (sign up at myBama)
  • Weather advisory broadcast over WVUA at 90.7 FM
  • Weather advisory broadcast over Alabama Public Radio (WUAL) at 91.5 FM
  • Weather advisories are broadcast via WUOA/WVUA-TV, which can be viewed across Central Alabama. Also, visit wvuatv.com for up-to-the-minute weather information. A mobile Web site is also available for your convenience.
